Prolonged heavy rain in Singapore and the surrounding region has caused significant disruptions to Singapore Airlines (SIA) operations, with more than 50 flights delayed or rescheduled over January 10-11. The carrier cited inclement weather as the primary cause of the disruptions, which are expected to persist into the weekend.
In a statement, SIA apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers, emphasizing that safety remains its top priority. “We seek our customers’ understanding as we closely monitor the situation and adjust flights as necessary,” said the airline.
Singapore has been experiencing relentless rain since January 5, with the Public Utilities Board (PUB) reporting record rainfall levels. The Changi area, near the city’s main airport, recorded 255.2mm of rain from Friday to Saturday—exceeding the average monthly rainfall of 222.4mm for January.
The downpour has also impacted daily life in Singapore, causing flooding in some areas and disrupting traffic. According to a Straits Times report, rainwater ingress affected lift operations in a high-rise apartment, adding to the challenges faced by residents.
The PUB has warned that the rainy weather is likely to persist until Monday, urging citizens to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines continues to manage the situation, ensuring passenger safety while dealing with the operational challenges brought by the unrelenting downpour.
