Vancouver, Canada: Transport Canada has issued a formal legal warning to Air India after one of its pilots was found unfit for duty during pre flight preparations at Vancouver International Airport, triggering serious aviation safety concerns.
The incident occurred on December 23 when the pilot was preparing to operate Air India’s scheduled daily service from Vancouver to Delhi. Following a report of concern related to a cockpit crew member, the Richmond Royal Canadian Mounted Police intervened and arrested the pilot. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, with no further details being disclosed at this stage.
Transport Canada stated that it has formally engaged with Air India as well as India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to ensure appropriate follow up action. While regulatory oversight of the airline rests primarily with the DGCA, Canadian authorities emphasized their commitment to taking immediate action if any safety risk is identified within their jurisdiction.
Vancouver International Airport confirmed that the affected flight was delayed for several hours due to the incident but later departed safely after an alternate pilot was assigned.
In its official statement, Transport Canada reiterated that Canadian aviation regulations strictly prohibit pilots and crew members from performing duties within 12 hours of alcohol consumption or while under its influence. Airlines are also prohibited from assigning any crew member deemed unfit for duty. Violations of these rules can lead to severe consequences, including suspension or cancellation of flight authorizations and possible judicial penalties.
Air India acknowledged the incident, stating that Flight AI186 experienced a last minute delay after one cockpit crew member was offloaded following concerns raised by Canadian authorities. The airline confirmed that an alternate pilot was rostered in line with safety protocols and that the concerned pilot has been removed from flying duties pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The airline added that any confirmed violation would invite strict disciplinary action as per company policy, while reaffirming full cooperation with local authorities.
Transport Canada underscored that aviation safety remains its highest priority and that it will continue to closely monitor compliance with all applicable regulations.
