BHADRAPUR, Nepal: Six of the seven people injured after a Buddha Air aircraft overran the runway at Bhadrapur Airport in Jhapa district have been discharged following primary treatment, police confirmed on Saturday.
The incident occurred at around 9:10 pm on Friday when a Buddha Air ATR 72 operating the Kathmandu to Bhadrapur service overshot the eastern end of the runway by approximately 300 metres during landing. The aircraft had departed Kathmandu at 8:23 pm.
According to Rajan Limbu, Superintendent of Police at the Jhapa District Police Office, six passengers were released after treatment, while the 24 year old co pilot Sushant Shrestha remains hospitalized. Shrestha, a resident of Lalitpur Ward 4, sustained injuries to his head and face and is currently undergoing treatment at Om Sai Pathibhara Hospital in Bhadrapur.

Police confirmed that a total of 56 people were on board at the time of the incident, including 51 passengers, four crew members, and one aircraft engineer. Besides the co pilot, those injured were identified as Sabin Jogi, Presika Adhikari, Sumitra Jogi, Kamal Prasad Kutuwal, Muna Ghatani, and Priya Ghatani. All injured individuals were initially taken to the same hospital for medical care.
Video footage circulating on social media showed security personnel and locals inspecting the aircraft and assisting passengers after the overrun, ensuring that no one remained inside the damaged plane. The footage captured passengers expressing relief as they were guided to safety.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the runway overrun. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal is expected to conduct a technical investigation to assess runway conditions, weather factors, and operational aspects related to the landing.
