An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger aircraft operating a flight from Baku to Grozny crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, according to the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES). The Embraer 190 aircraft, designated flight J2-8243, went down close to Aktau Airport, prompting a swift response that successfully rescued 28 individuals from the wreckage.
The aircraft was carrying 67 people, including 62 passengers and five crew members. Reports indicate that among the passengers were 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, six Kazakhs, and three Kyrgyz nationals. Initial investigations suggest that a bird strike may have contributed to the accident.
In response to the incident, MES dispatched 52 personnel and 11 pieces of equipment to the crash site. The Embraer 190 is designed to accommodate between 96 and 114 passengers, depending on its cabin configuration, and has a range of up to 4,500 kilometers.
The flight had taken off 11 minutes ahead of schedule but issued an emergency signal while flying over the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijani media reported that foggy conditions prevented the aircraft from landing in Grozny, leading to its diversion to Makhachkala and subsequently to Aktau.
As investigations continue, authorities are focusing on the circumstances surrounding the bird strike and its implications for aviation safety in the region.
