The Pokhara Regional International Airport, which was built with China's loan assistance, is not fully operational and technical problems are starting to appear. Two flights from Kathmandu returned without landing when the airport's radar malfunctioned on Monday, which was started with pomp by the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu.

The plane that took off from Tribhuvan International Airport returned to Kathmandu after there was a problem with the communication equipment at Pokhara International Airport. According to sources, the flight was intercepted after the VAHF system in the radar malfunctioned.

Tribhuvan Airport informed that on Monday morning, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines flights returned to Kathmandu without landing in Pokhara.

Spokesperson of Tribhuvan International Airport, Subas Jha, informed that the plane of Yeti and Shree Air returned to Kathmandu after the pilot could not be contacted at the tower of Pokhara Airport. "Two planes returned to Kathmandu when there was a problem with the tower's communication service," said Jha.

This airport was handed over to the government only recently. The construction of this airport started on 18 July 2073 after an agreement between the government and the Chinese government-owned contractor CAMCE.

To build the Pokhara airport, the government signed an agreement with China's Exim Bank in 2072 and took a loan of 1.37 billion Chinese yuan. No need to pay 25 percent interest on it. The amount that does not have to pay interest comes to 344 million 46 million 85 thousand yuan. There is 2 percent interest on the remaining amount. This is an expensive interest rate. The interest on loans taken from international donor agencies is less than 1 percent. This loan has a grace period of 7 years and is to be repaid in a total of 20 years.

Earlier, it was revealed that the main equipment was handed over without connecting to the airport. The Instrument Landing System (ILS), one of the main equipments required for aircraft landing at the airport, was installed only after the handover of the airport. Yeti Airlines plane crashed in Pokhara before the installation of ILS.

The equipment was installed at the airport on 11 February (23 February). While Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' inaugurated the airport on 17th January (1st January). Yeti Airlines plane crashed near the airport on 1 Magh (15 January).

The plane of Yeti Airlines had an accident while approaching the airport. According to the initial report of the inquiry committee formed by the government to investigate the accident, the primary cause of the plane crash was that the propeller (blades) of both engines were feathered, i.e. they did not deviate according to a certain degree but remained at 90 degrees (straight).

It has also been revealed that the Instrument Landing System (ILS) equipment was operated only after the accident at the airport. Airport spokesperson Jashoda Subedi informed Purdafas that the device was installed at the airport on 11th February (23rd February). This equipment is used for landing in normal and adverse conditions.
