Kathmandu,Nepal: Air passenger traffic in Nepal has witnessed a remarkable surge, with both domestic and international sectors showing significant growth. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), domestic air travelers increased by 13% and international passengers by 7.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Presenting the annual progress report on CAAN’s 26th anniversary, Director General Pradeep Adhikari revealed that by November 2024, Nepal's three international airports handled a total of 8.76 million domestic passengers, up from 7.7 million in November 2023. Similarly, international passenger numbers rose to 4.45 million by November 2024.
Nepal currently operates three international airports: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, and Pokhara International Airport. Of the country's 55 airports, 35 are connected through domestic flight networks.
The number of international airlines operating in Nepal decreased from 29 in 2023 to 28 in 2024 due to the merger of Vistara Airlines with Air India. Nepal now connects to 29 international destinations across 16 countries. On the domestic front, 19 of the 21 licensed airlines are currently active.
Significant infrastructure upgrades are underway. At TIA, a master plan aims to optimize its limited space to enhance capacity, including constructing a new apron and taxiway to accommodate up to 18 international aircraft. Advanced electronic systems have been installed in terminal buildings, and a 315-meter-long approach board and fire exit have been completed. Parking areas have also been expanded.
Construction has commenced on Nijgadh International Airport, a future hub meeting ICAO Code 4F standards. The detailed engineering design for Phase 1 of this alternative international airport has been completed.
These developments underscore Nepal's commitment to bolstering aviation infrastructure and safety, positioning the country as a growing hub for regional and international travel.
