US approves USD 686 million F16 upgrade package for Pakistan

Washington: The United States has approved a USD 686 million package to upgrade Pakistan’s F16 fighter fleet, authorizing the sale of advanced technology aimed at modernizing the aircraft and strengthening operational security. The approval was confirmed through a notification sent by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency to Congress on Monday.

The package includes Link 16 systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics upgrades, training and logistics support. The agency stated that the sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by ensuring Pakistan’s F16 fleet remains capable and secure.

The upgrade is intended to enhance Pakistan’s operational readiness and address current and emerging security challenges. The modernization will cover Pakistan Air Force’s F16 Block 52 and Mid Life Upgrade models. According to the agency, the enhancements will also improve interoperability between the Pakistan Air Force and the US Air Force during operations, joint exercises and training.

The notice adds that Pakistan has shown strong interest in adopting the upgraded technologies. Of the total USD 686 million cost, USD 37 million accounts for major defense equipment while USD 649 million covers additional materials and support services.
